О фильме: Сюжет разворачивается в марте 1944 года. Кажется, что окончательный разгром фашистской Германии совсем близок. Однако радость грядущей победы омрачает серия дерзких и жестоких убийств. Главаря банды поймать не удаётся, а состав налётчиков всякий раз меняется. Но на месте преступлений неизменно находят портреты убитых. За эти рисунки банду прозвали «Мёртвой головой», а её главаря − Художником. Расследованием занимается опытный майор Ефимов и капитан Сазонов. Когда к работе над запутанным делом подключается сотрудник НКВД, каждый герой сериала оказывается под подозрением — и небезосновательно…
